Social Welfare and Profit Maximization from Revealed Preferences

چکیده
Consider the seller’s problem of finding “optimal” prices for her (divisible) goods when faced with a set of consumers, given that she can only observe their purchased bundles at set prices, i.e., access to only revealed preferences (demand oracle). We study both social welfare and profit maximization under this setting, assuming concave valuation function of consumers and convex production cost function of the seller, standard assumptions in economics. Recent series of works (Roth et al., 2016, 2017) studied this problem for various special cases of valuation and cost functions, while making no assumption on the demand oracle. In this work, for social-welfare maximization, we obtain a natural interpretation of the revealed preference feedback in the dual optimization problem, and thereby obtain a simple gradient based algorithm. This simplifies and improves on (Roth et al., 2016, 2017) at least by a quadratic factor in terms of query complexity. Second, we study social-welfare maximization under the online setting, where consumers arrive one-by-one in a random order a.k.a. secretary model. For the case where consumer valuation can be arbitrary continuous function, we design a price posting mechanism that achieves average expected social welfare up to an additive factor of 1 √ m of maximum social welfare, where m is the number of consumers. Third, for the profit maximization, we obtain the first FPTAS when valuation and cost functions are separable, with a matching lower bound. For the non-separable case we show that no PTAS exists, even when only cost function is non-separable. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Social Preferences and Supply Chain Performance: An Experimental Study
A working paper in the INSEAD Working Paper Series is intended as a means whereby a faculty researcher's thoughts and findings may be communicated to interested readers. The paper should be considered preliminary in nature and may require revision. Supply chain contracting literature traditionally has focused on aligning incentives for economically rational players. Recent work has hypothesized...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms for Non-single-minded Profit-Maximization Problems with Limited Supply
We consider profit-maximization problems for combinatorial auctions with non-single minded valuation functions and limited supply. We obtain fairly general results that relate the approximability of the profit-maximization problem to that of the corresponding social-welfare-maximization (SWM) problem, which is the problem of finding an allocation (S1, . . . , Sn) satisfying the capacity constra...
متن کاملApproximability and Inapproximability of Social Welfare Optimization in Multiagent Resource Allocation
Resource allocation is a fundamental problem in the field of multiagent systems, where a set of resources need to be allocated to a group of agents in a way so as to optimizing social welfare. In the last few years this problem has received much attention, especially due to its wide applicability domain (see the survey of Chevaleyre et al. [CDE+06]). This thesis studies the approximability and ...
متن کاملMaximizing Happiness?
The measurement of individual happiness challenges the notion that revealed preferences only reliably and empirically reflect individual utility. Reported subjective well-being is a broader concept than traditional decision utility; it also includes concepts like experience and procedural utility. Microand macroeconometric happiness functions offer new insights on determinants of life satisfact...
متن کاملA STUDY OF OPTIMAL DIMENSIONING OF QUEUES WITH RESPECT TO SOCIAL AND INDIVIDUAL PROFIT
In this paper, a system of GIG/l/K queue is considered. The optimal system's capacity (K), when the system is optimized with respect to the benefit of the entire system (social optimization) and when the criterion for optimality is individual gains (individual optimization), is determined and compared. In social optimization, the system capacity is obtained through maximization of the syst...
